Learn how to create a better quality of life as you get older.

We live in a society that makes it easy for us to get fat.  We have fast food joints on every corner where we get to supersize our meals.  We are all less active than society was 40 years ago.  We sit more and walk less. They say sitting is the new smoking and I agree.  Life has been designed to be easier for all of us. As we get older we eat like we are still 20 years old which is a big problem because our metabolic rate and activity decreases.  As a result we have become overweight and immobile.  And so I found myself as I was approaching 50.  I was on that slippery slope into old age.  Each year a little slower, fatter, weaker and an additional body ache. As I pondered my future I wanted off this slippery slope.

My name is Robert Flynn and this is how I started my journey to a better quality of life.

that’s me on the far left

I was at a family reunion and noticed my siblings and I all suffered from a combination of hip, knee, and foot problems.   The reality set in that I was overweight and approaching 50 years old.  It was a depressing realization.  I had been an athlete has a younger man but it was obvious to me at this moment that I was a long way from being an athlete.  I weighed about 245 lbs. and didn’t move well with all the aches and pains.  I recently had to get orthotics because of chronic foot and lower back pain.  I walked with a limp.  I was uncomfortable even sitting and if you’ve been as overweight as I was you know what I mean.  I had been living a sedentary lifestyle for years.   I had to lose some of this layer of fat I had gained.

Our physical health became the topic of discussion at the reunion.  My siblings and I decided after the reunion we would all start one of the popular workout programs from the late night infomercials.  One week after the reunion I was the only one still following the workout program.  Over this first week I came to realize I was afraid of becoming an old man unable to move and participate in life into my retirement.  I couldn’t think of anything worse than reaching retirement and not being able to enjoy it.  I was committed to getting in better shape.

I progressed from the infomercial type workouts to joining a gym.  I started weight training and eating less.  At this time I had no idea how I should eat or what I should eat.  I had no idea how I should train for my goal of losing body fat.  Over the next two years I invested in coaching to reach my goal.  I learned a lot from coaching as well as my own research.  When I started out I had no idea there was so much to learn about losing fat.  The most important tip I learned about fat loss was to maintain muscle.  Maintaining muscle required certain skills and knowledge of nutrition and training.  My first coach walked me through this learning phase and helped me prepare for a bodybuilding competition.  It was through this process of contest prep I discovered my passion for learning how to improve my physical health and applying what I learned.

At 50 years old I had gone from 245 lbs. to 165 lbs.
